Lawkapala foundation

Lawkapala Foundation is an initiative of the Myanmar Diaspora in Australia; the idea to establish the charity organisation was generated in 2022. The organisation was formally established on 3 January 2023 with three board of directors and one company secretary and registered for ABN under public company legal structure on 3 January 2023 with aims to assist in strengthening processes, reforms, institutions, and actors that build, advance, and safeguard democracy, community development, public health, formal and non-formal education, and humanitarian assistance initiatives in Myanmar.

According to charity sub-types categorised by ACNC, the foundation decided to operate under three sub-types: advancing education, advancing social or public welfare, and promoting or protecting human rights.

Through educational programs, the foundation will support Myanmar's democratization and federalism reform process. In supporting this, the foundation will assist and work with institutions and actors who are delivering education programs and conducting research in Myanmar in the democracy, federalism, and peace disciplines.

Under the consideration of social or public welfare, the foundation will help disaster victims and vulnerable communities in Myanmar by improving disaster resilience and mobilizing resources for humanitarian assistance. In doing this, the foundation will raise funds for organizations that are actively engaged in such activities in Myanmar and in the border areas; and provide technical support by coordinating with international organizations and experts working in the disaster management discipline.

Under the principles and practices related to the International Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination, International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and Convention on the Rights of the Child, the foundation will carry out human rights promotion and protection activities to monitor human rights violations, bring justice to victims of human rights abuses, conduct research activities on human rights issues, and deliver public education program on human rights. In doing this, the foundation will raise funds and work with organizations and individuals dealing with Myanmar's human rights issues.

To operate in the three key areas, the foundation applied ACNC and became a legally registered Australian Charity in May 2023. The Foundation plans to be a signatory member of the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID). After receiving the official charitable organization status for international development work, the foundation will participate in the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP) and get the DFAT’s assessment to gain DFAT accreditation to receive the Australian Government’s funding under the ANCP.
